How to use Remove Background
- Choose or drop a photo. Pick Any object for products and pets, or People for a faster portrait cut-out.
- Press Remove background. The first run downloads the AI model, after that it works offline.
- Pick a new background: Transparent, a Color, a Gradient, Blur, or upload your own Image. Then download as PNG or JPG.
About this tool
Removing a background used to mean careful work with a selection tool. This tool uses an AI segmentation model that looks at the whole picture and decides, pixel by pixel, what belongs to the subject. Hair, fur and soft edges are kept as partly transparent pixels, so cut-outs blend naturally onto a new background.
Once the subject is cut out you can change the background as often as you like without running the model again. A solid color such as white or light blue is what most ID photo, passport and marketplace listings ask for. Gradients give profile pictures and product shots a studio look. Blur keeps the original scene but softens it, like a portrait-mode camera. With Image you upload any photo as the new backdrop, scaled to fill the frame, and you can move and resize the subject on top of it.
The model runs on your own device using WebGPU when available, or WebAssembly otherwise. Your photo is never uploaded. The model files (about 7 MB for People, 176 MB for Any object) are downloaded once from Hugging Face and then cached by your browser.
Questions and answers
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device. Only the model files are fetched from the internet. Your image never leaves your computer or phone.
Which mode should I choose?
Any object handles products, animals, cars and people with fine detail, but downloads a larger model and is slower on older devices. People is small and fast and works best for portraits and selfies.
How do I make a white background for a passport or product photo?
Remove the background, choose Color and pick white (or type any color code), then download as JPG.
Can I use my own photo as the new background?
Yes. Choose Image, upload a background photo, and use the Size and position sliders to place the subject where you want it.
Why should I download PNG instead of JPG?
Only PNG keeps transparency. If you chose Transparent, download PNG. For colored or photo backgrounds, JPG gives a much smaller file.
Why is the first run slow?
The model has to be downloaded the first time. After that it is cached, and each photo usually takes a few seconds, or under a second on devices with WebGPU.
