Different formats suit different jobs. JPG is universal and great for photos. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, ideal for logos and screenshots. WebP produces much smaller files with similar quality and is used by most modern websites.
A common problem is downloading a WebP image that an older app or upload form refuses to accept. Converting it to JPG or PNG fixes that in one click. Going the other way, converting large PNG photos to JPG or WebP can shrink them dramatically.
When converting a transparent image to JPG, transparent areas are filled with white because JPG has no transparency.
