    How to use Discount Calculator

    1. Choose Percent off, Amount off, or Find the discount if you already know both prices.
    2. Type the original price and the discount. Add tax or a quantity if you need them.
    3. Read the price you pay and your saving. The steps underneath show exactly how it was worked out.

    About this tool

    A discount is taken off the original price: 25% off 4,500 is 4,500 × 0.75 = 3,375.

Stacked discounts are not added together. "25% off, plus an extra 10% at the till" takes the extra 10% from the already reduced price. 4,500 becomes 3,375, then 3,037.50. That is 32.5% off in total, not 35%. The calculator shows both numbers so you can compare deals properly.

Find the discount works backwards. Enter the original price and what you paid to see the real percentage you saved, which is handy for checking whether a "huge sale" really is one.

Sales tax or VAT is added after the discount, which is how most shops charge it.

    Questions and answers

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price. Or multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100) to get the sale price directly.

Is 20% off and then 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The second discount applies to the lower price, so together they give 28% off. The calculator shows the combined figure.

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

Usually after. You pay tax on the reduced price, which is what this calculator assumes.
